God’s Ideal Design and Plan for Marriage

I am a hopeless romantic who believes that marriage is the place for all expressions of romance. But marriage isn’t all or just about romance, it is about and revolves around love. My God who seats in heaven is love, so it is safe to say that marriage is about God and should revolve around God. My God is a master planner, the one who is love and created marriage for the full of expressions of love created a plan and design for marriage. This ideal plan can be found in the account of creation in Genesis 2:18-24

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 19And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. 21And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed

In this blog post, we shall delve into God’s ideal plan and design for marriages.

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him: This verse is profound in the way it expresses God’s thoughtfulness for His creation – man. Even before man anticipated or felt the need for a help mate, God already thought about it and decided to provide a solution – a helpmate for man. At this point in creation, God had created Adam, put him in Eden to till the ground and cultivate the garden(Genesis 2:15). This is pointer to the fact that a help mate was needed and is needed for a man who is in Eden, with the knowledge of his purpose on the earth and is busy with his purpose on earth. With that said, the ideal man for the ideal marriage God designed is a man who dwells in Eden(God’s presence) and is busy with all that God has committed into his hands to do.

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him: In this verse, I see a man who is busy with all that God has committed into his hands and while this man is busy he begins to notice the void to be filled. So as he creates new names for the animals God put in his care, he is on the look out to see perhaps there may be one of these animals who could be a perfect help mate to him. Unknown to Him, God has a plan yet to be revealed to him about providing a help meet for him. Regardless of the loneliness or void he feels, this man and son of God continues to tend to the garden God has given to him.

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof:

Just look at my almighty God, the creator of all good things. He went into the man’s ribs and created someone just like him to be his help mate. This is another pointer that for every man God creates, He also creates a woman perfect for him for companionship and all of the good things that happen in God ordained unions. Sadly after the fall of man, the nature of sin was introduced into the genetics of man and woman. This nature causes rebellion against the will of God, it resists the hand of God in moulding us into what He desires and dim fit. Therefore, every man and woman should be born again by the spirit of God in order to be able to submit easily to the recreation of the Lord. I remember that before i came to Christ, anger was something that easily beset and besieged me but I constantly yield to the moulding of the Lord to make me into a woman who isn’t ruled by anger or the vices of the devil. It could be something else for you and the Lord wants to change you, remold you and make you into that perfect son fit for His daughter who is also submitted to recreation by the Lord. Are you willing to yield to the lord today?

And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man: The book I am currently reading helped to shed God’s light on this particular verse for me. The title of the book is “this momentary marriage” written by pastor John Piper. It looks to me like all the cultures of the world(consciously and unconsciously) adopted the father walks the bride down the aisle to her husband from this verse. Because, this is exactly what our dearest God did. This verse tells us that God brought the woman to the man. Take a moment to picture the scenario. Adam was busy with tending to the garden while God in His gentle nature breezed into the garden, walking towards the man with his bride in His hand. Oh! what joy the man must have felt to behold his bride, what joy the bride must have felt to be led by her father in heaven to her man. In both ways, there was and there is the leading and guidance of God in every ideal marriage.

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man: As the Lord brought the woman to the man, there was the inner witness to confirm that indeed the woman was and is his help mate. God’s leading never goes without a confirmation I have learned overtime. So as the Lord leads you to your husband or as he brings your bride to you be sure to look out for that confirmation.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh: God put this in place with the future which is now in view. He knew that every man would grow up in a family and there may be the tendency to be so attached to his parents which may interfere with the perfect union He has prepared for marriage. This is not to say that the man forgets or neglects his parents but there shall be a leaving in order to cleave to his wife. The man and his wife become one inseparable flesh when they are joined together not to be separated by any man. I have learned from many sermons how a Godly marriage; a three fold cord between the man, God and the woman points us the union that exists between God the father, son and the Holy Spirit. This trinity union is never separated, the only time there was a separation was in death when Jesus Christ had to go to hades to bring back the keys of death and hell. And this is the same plan God has for marriages, only in death should there be a separation. By the power in the name of Jesus Christ, if your marriage is on the verge of experiencing a separation, may there be a binding together now never to be broken until death, Amen.

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed: Oh! the depth of this verse! This tells us how intimately the man and woman got to learn of themselves. And in the revelation of themselves to one another, with or without imperfection – they loved themselves unconditionally. This form of exposure must have entailed a lot of verbal and non verbal communication. This is exactly what God planned and intends for every marriage on earth. He went ahead to tell them to procreate, multiply and fill the earth with men and women who would yield to the same process. How wonderful it would be for all men and women on earth to yield to God’s ideal plan for thier lives in marriage. Not only would it save us all from heart aches but it would also save the world from broken people because broken marriages often times create broken people.

As I bring this to a close , I pray that Godly marriages continue to fill the earth in Jesus name.
