As the days came close for Jesus Christ to go be with the father in heaven; after He had died and resurrected – He made appearances to His disciples. Apostle John was able to capture many of these moments and he recorded them in the book of John. In the past couple of weeks, I saw something that made me laugh hard at the interaction Jesus Christ had with His seven disciples by the sea of Galilee. Before I get to the meat of today’s blog post, see things that stood out for me from studying the book of John 21
Jesus Christ Prepared and Served His disciples Breakfast: Jesus probably watched as His long-time friends and disciples went about their daily task of fishing at the sea. As they busied themselves, Jesus Christ prepared breakfast for them. Then He beckoned to them to come over for breakfast and as they came closer – He served them. He could have told them to help themselves but my Jesus didn’t think it beyond Him to serve His disciples’ breakfast. Do you see what I see? I would leave it to you to deduce Jesus’ humility and more from this act of His. – John 21:12-13
Jesus Put His House in order & tells them things to come before He left: As Jesus interacted with His disciples, He ensured that He reiterated certain things to them. He also went ahead to give Simon Peter the instruction to be shepherd over the flock of the body of Christ that will spring up; this way He was able to prepare their minds and hands for things to come.
Jesus told Peter to mind His business: This is the part I found hilarious and profound! So my Jesus shared with Simon Peter details about his death- the manner in which Peter would die was the way ordained and planned by God so that Peter would bring glory to God even in death. LOL! Instead of my dear Peter asking leading questions about his walk or faith journey, he turned around to ask Jesus, “how about John, how would he die?”. My Jesus responded to him, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” As for you, follow me. – John 21:22.
Jesus’ response to Peter is evident and a pointer to one thing – Jesus wills for His disciples of old and of present to be concerned and consumed with their personal walk with Him. As His disciples, it is not necessarily our business how and when the next disciple manifests God’s glory. This is not to say that we can not strengthen one another in our faith walk, Jesus Christ instructed Peter to do just that in John 21:17. We have been called to a personal walk with Jesus and we shall give an account of our walk personally, not collectively.
