Can Jesus Satisfy?

In the year 2021, in May to be precise – God wrought such a huge miracle in my life. One that was unbelievable, one that words can never quantify the magnitude of it. It was such a huge miracle that I saw no way out of the challenge before my miracle. It was at the dying moment God showed up for me as the one who parts red seas. I wrote about that testimony here and one day, soon I would give the full details of that testimony. In that season, I was floating on cloud nine and my anthem was a song written and sung by Minister Judikay – “Omemma“. A part of the song says, “If You do nothing else for me, You have done enough oh”. I sang this song happily for months and I meant every word of it! My heart was overflowing with gratitude for God and His nature, in that moment. I didn’t want or need anything – My Jesus was just enough for me. Fast forward to months later, I found myself needy, wanting more, and questioning my God who parted the Red Sea before me. I began to empathize and relate with the Israelites who seemed so easily to forget all that God did for them only to grumble and murmur but thank God for the Holy Spirit who reminds me of the goodness of my Lord Jesus Christ.

I was reminded of that phase in my life as I read a story by my big sis, sister Itunu, and I could almost feel all the emotions spilled in the chapter. The main character in the story was going through a phase in her life where she questioned her faith walk with God, questioned her decisions, and ultimately questioned “if Jesus could truly satisfy her?” As the question hit. my face, I couldn’t help but ponder on it all through that day only for me to wake up the next morning feeling that way. Feeling the need to get answers from God – Can Jesus satisfy like He says He would? As I pondered on this question, I sensed the Lord take me back to the third week in January when I was out on vacation. I didn’t have to worry about work, all I did was take classes about deliverance and spend time with God. I didn’t even do half of the things I planned to do with God but I was deeply satisfied in His presence. I felt so much satisfaction, I didn’t want or feel like interacting with the world around me. I just wanted to be, and keep my mind stayed on the Lord. As the Lord took me back memory lane, I got the answer to my question- Jesus Christ can truly satisfy me.

My Jesus had a conversation with a Samaritan woman many years ago; a woman who had been married about five times(John 4:17-17). A woman who yearned to be loved and accepted. A woman who sought to fill up the void that stood high in her heart. She probably thought she could fill up the void with her first husband or with her second husband and probably thought the same for the third, fourth, and fifth. You, my dear, may nurse the same sentiments right now. Perhaps, when you get that job, you will get the satisfaction you desire. Perhaps when you finally get married, you will get the satisfaction you desire, or perhaps the satisfaction will come when you have that baby you so desire, or that fat bank account that you desire so much.

The sad truth is that these things in itself will never give you satisfaction. The prince of this world has put structures in place to sway men and women away from the living water that can truly satisfy them. That is why the bible tells us that “although we are in this world, we are not of this world- John 17:16 ” Through Christ Jesus, we are seated in heavenly places where hunger or thirst do not exist – Ephesians 2:6. This reality, this consciousness is what we should live in and live by. Jesus Christ can truly satisfy, if He could not or if He cannot, He wouldn’t have said so to the Samaritan woman. Jesus Christ knew the deepest need of the woman at the well and that was why He addressed her need to be satisfied. Let us take a look at their conversation in John Chapter 4:13-14.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”.

John4:13-14

The first kind of water that Jesus spoke about was a man-made kind of well – the type sourced from the well dug by man. This is the kind of well most men and women in this world tend to drink from but the truth is these wells can never satisfy the thirst, hunger, and yearnings of a soul. The second kind of water that Jesus spoke about is the one which He gives to as many as come to draw from Him. He says that whoever drinks this water which He gives will never thirst! I believe Him and can attest to His word because I have drank of this water, I keep drinking of this water which He offers to everyone. Do you see how the sentence is phrased in such a way that points out that the action to drink should not stop – “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst”? Even for those of us in faith, the act of drinking this life-giving well should never stop lest we be starved and malnourished into doubt and hunger.

The Samaritan woman was a wise woman because as soon as she gained the knowledge of the well that would feed her to satisfaction, she asked for access immediately. See John 4:15 -“The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” As I bring this blog post to a close, I would love to encourage you my dear who may be thirsty, needy, and yearning for something lasting, something that can truly satisfy to come to draw and drink of the well of salvation which the Lord has made accessible to all through Christ Jesus. To my brothers and sisters in Christ who have drank of this living water, be encouraged to keep drinking of this endless, satisfying well of salvation. There and then can we be truly satisfied.
