Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my savior ♬♬♬ is probably a song that you must have heard or sang a number of times in your life. It is probably your theme song for all I know right now. But what does it mean to stand on God’s promises? It means to stand on God’s expressed agreement or covenant to you. I have highlighted “expressed” there as a pointer that it is a key word from that definition. For us to know God’s promises for our lives, it must have been expressed one way or the other to us. And the surest means through which God has communicated His promises to us is through His word. And the Holy bible is a compendium of God’s word for and to His children.
So how do we stand on God’s word? It definitely doesn’t mean that I should stand literally stand on the Holy bible. Absolutely not! This blog post seeks to answer this question in the most concise form possible.
The first step to stand on God’s word is to first know the God who gave the word. How many of you would sign off on a contract without knowing or having some knowledge of the parties involved? I didn’t think so either. Before we sign off on any contract, we do some due diligence to at least have some assurance of their credibility. This also goes and applies to standing on God’s word. To stand on God’s word is to expressly agree to the terms of the contract embedded in His word. And to agree to His terms without knowing Him or His credibility doesn’t exactly sound right in my opinion.
Yes, my God can be trusted to fulfill all of His word given in scripture in our lives and in the world- Psalm 145:13, Hebrews 10:23. It is for our greatest benefits to learn about Him for ourselves. Amongst the benefits that come with knowing God for ourselves is the fact that it would help us stand on His word unshakeable. In order words, knowing the God who can be trusted for ourselves helps our faith in Him, helps us to trust Him unwaveringly.
Next Step is to allow God’s word build and shape our lives: Almost every agreement or contract comes with its terms and conditions for their fulfillment. And so does many of God’s promises for our lives. For example God promises us long life for as much as we honor our parents (Exodus 20:12), He also promises us good success when and if we study and meditate on His word day and night (Joshua 1:8-9), He promises us prosperity when we offer our first fruits and offerings to Him(Proverbs 3:9-10). As easy as these terms and conditions may sound to do, many people actually find it daunting to study and meditate on God’s word day and night or even give their first fruits and offerings. But when we allow God’s word to build, shape and inform our decisions and the ways we live our lives daily, we would begin to see how easy it is to live for Him and live up to His standard in His covenant for us.
Know God’s word for you and run with it! This all boils down to knowing the exact words that God has spoken or written about you and aspects of your life. The devil is constantly eager, happy to steal God’s word from the bosom of our lives only to replace it with lies. And other times, our realities may just not make sense or add, it is expedient that in those moments of doubts or confusion we go back to God’s word for clarity, for strength and the absolute truth over lives. For example, although Abraham was old in his body and perhaps had the slimmest chances of making a baby with his dear wife at age 99. He staggered not on the promises of God through unbelief or doubt but was strong in faith, giving glory to God- Romans 4:20. Do you know what it means to stagger not? It means he was not moved one bit by his old age, he was not moved by what seemed to be his reality in that moment, he was solid strong and unbending standing on God’s promise for him. And all of this started with His knowing exactly what God had promised him. What has God promised you? Ask Him, lDig into His word, listen to Him, write it down and run with it. This leads us to the last point on this post
Confess God’s word non-stop and Insist on the manifestation of all of His word for your life: The word of God is spirit and life but then His word became flesh and dwelt with us (John 1: 14) Even more so, by the pronouncement of God’s word over the earth every single thing we can see, touch and feel on the earth came into existence(Genesis 1). It is God’s intention to teach us spiritual and physical truths through His word and from the two verses quoted we can infer two things: God’s word although spirit can become life in our lives. God’s word can be made manifest, can come to fruition in our lives, can be held, felt and touched. Only if we can believe and confess it and pray it into existence in our lives. A classic example of insisting God’s word or standing on God’s word in our lives is the scenario with Elisha when He confessed with his mouth that,”there shall be rain”. The land where he lived had gone many months without rain with no glimpse of rain in sight. Regardless, he professed with his mouth that there shall be rain. But he didn’t just stop there, he went on his knees with his head in between his knees and prayed seven different times till he saw rain pour down on the earth. Every single time he sent his servant to check if there was any sign of rain and the response was in the negative, he went back yet again to his place of prayer to insist that rain be poured down from heaven(I Kings 18:41-44).
Perhaps, you have insisted for the longest time for God’s word to become life and dwell with you but for some reason every time you check for a sign you see nothing. I declare in the name of Jesus that you receive strength to insist on nothing short of God’s word for you. Press on my dear, keep insisting, keep bombarding heaven and the earth with prayers and the confession of God’s word till you see all of God’s word come to life in your life.
Amen.
