- “The Beauty of Persistence: Seeking God Like King David
King David has to be my favorite bible personality after Apostle Peter. I love and find David’s relationship with God inspiring. David was a man who thoroughly enjoyed God and His presence. I wonder where he learned how to commune with God, I wonder how he learned how to just be with God, I wonder how he learned to stay relentless in his pursuit of God.
The other day, as I studied the bible, I stumbled on a piece of information I probably haven’t seen or paid attention to in my entire 8-year walk with God. I love how I can discover new things in the bible, I love how refreshing it is to study the bible with the Holy Spirit. My recommendation is to study the bible:
- With the Help of the Holy Spirit,
- Take pauses while you read,
- ask the Holy Spirit questions,
- Ask God to share insights about verses you find fascinating
- and pray; pray about verses that stand out to you, pray for understanding, pray for the manifestation of God’s word for you through the verses.
II Samuel 21:1 shares some information that is easy to miss. Per the record, it says that there was a famine for three years; however, year after year, King David inquired of the Lord.
Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, “It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites. – II Samuel 21:1
Talk to God about everything! Ask Him Questions about everything happening with you:
What lessons can we infer from King David’s interaction with the Lord concerning the famine during his reign? He inquired of the Lord, the bible says – he asked the Lord questions about the famine. I imagine his questions were centered around finding out the reason for the famine and finding a lasting solution to the famine. If we looked at this situation through the lens of a man, we would probably seek human solutions to the famine ravaging the land. However, King David sought the Lord earnestly without wavering for answers about the famine. My dear friend, let us learn and cultivate the habit and attitude to speak to God about everything! No matter the situation’s size, God hears and answers the “minutest” things.
Show up!
Now this is what I find encouraging, and I hope that you are encouraged as well as you read and seek the Lord for yourself. Year after year, King David had the same prayer point, had the same question for God. “Lord, why do your people languish in famine?”. Time and time again, he asked the father the same question. It is King David’s persistence for me – he kept showing up at heaven’s gate with the same question, same energy – I will not stop showing up, Lord, until you tell me why we suffer in famine. Although there are many testimonies of men nd women who kept showing up in the place of prayer in the bible. The Holy Spirit is highlighting Elijah’s testimony in my heart right now. He was a man who had similar passion, personal traits to us; however had a demand from heaven. One thing he wanted from heaven; for heaven to pour down water to the earth after about three years of drought. I Kings 18:41-43 tells us that Elijah prayed again and again -7 times until Ahab told him he could see a cloud in the skies. These are unrelenting men in the place of prayer, who stayed committed to show up! From the depths of my heart, I pray that you receive the Grace and strength to keep showing up to the throne of Grace until you receive that which you desire and even after you have received it.
They that wait, enjoy renewed Strength:
Waiting upon the Lord could be challenging; some days are exciting, filled with hope, joy, other days seem like a blur, and other days are inexplicable. The bible did not shed so much light about the emotions that King David experienced as he waited on God in this particular situation. Nonetheless, knowing King David, I am almost sure he took his precious time in God’s presence – I imagine that he probably spent days or months each year asking the Father about the famine. Our dear God, being God who is the Lord of hosts, reigns in His splendour and Glory, took His sweet time to respond to King David’s inquiries. As I write this and think about it, the three years in human time were probably like a millisecond in heaven or nothing because God isn’t bound by time; it is we humans that are bound and constrained by time. Moreover, a thousand years here on earth is like a day to God – II Peter 3:8
With that said, no matter how daunting it may sound to keep praying about the same thing, something that I have come to experientially learn for myself is that in waiting upon the Lord, strength is indeed renewed. I strongly believe that King David’s strength was renewed as he waited upon the Lord. God strengthened him to keep showing up as he showed up; the more often we show up in God’s presence, the more He breathes upon us, strengthens us to keep waiting until He clips our backs with those wings to mount up as eagles.
My dear friend, I pray that you receive the Grace to show up in the place of prayer, become strengthened, and mount up with wings as an eagle in Jesus’ name. You are loved, heard, and seen by the Lord, my dear. You know, the beauty of this story is that God showed up! It might have seemed as though God wasn’t listening to King David in the 1st month, 2nd month, 24th month, 35th month, until suddenly he heard a voice from heaven with the answers to his request. Oh! Dear friend, your answers are coming – wait upon the Lord, I say wait.
The answers may come with instructions, though God gave the instructions to carry out to end the famine. Are you ready to take action? Are you ready to obey God to the letter? I hope that your answer is yes. 🙂
