The Gift of Expressing Ourselves to our father in heaven.

My week started off with me stumbling on Chandler Moore’s album which he released sometime in November 2020. The album is completely different from the what he’d usually sing, the title of the album is feelings. On this album he expressed his feelings in words and melodies to Jesus. From listening to the album, I perceive that some of the songs came from a place of pain, grieve, exhaustion and a longing to draw strength from God while Chandler encourages all believers around the world to express ourselves to our father.

Is it biblical to express ourselves to our father, you may ask. By all means yes! I will respond. We have all been created in His image and in His likeness – Genesis 1:26 which means we have similarities and traits just like our father which includes and not limited to the ability to have emotions. All over scripture, we see different scenarios where God expressed the emotions that He had towards His children and even till date, He still stays showing us how He feels towards us. If we pay close attention to His expressions, we would recognize when and how He expresses His emotions to us.

All week long, it just seemed like God was poking me to let it all out before Him! I had a number of things on my mind that I was not speaking to Him about, I was only scratching the surface – thanking Him for life and committing my days into His hands. All of my emotions and feelings for the week were bottled up until Friday when I let it all out.

In this moment, I am reminded and appreciative of the ways and means God has given to us to express ourselves and how we feel to Him. He didn’t endow us with so many ways of expressions only to keep them all bottled up inside. It is great to confess positive words but many times, God wants us to communicate with Him. God created us for fellowship, for communion. I believe He wants us to tell Him about everything like we would tell a friend or even more than we tell a friend because He alone has the limitless ability to comfort, help or give the best advise.

King David was a man who may have utilized all the tools of expression at his disposal. The many chapters of the book of Psalms contains many of king David’s expressions towards God. When he felt depressed, when he was afraid, when he was filled with joy, when he was victorious – he told it all to God.

I spill out all of my complaints before God, I tell Him about my troubles in details

Psalm 142:

The things we can do with all of our overwhelming emotions; whether good or bad is to :

  • Express them all to Jesus
  • Pray About them
  • And never stop expressing the ways you feel to God.

King David a man after God’s heart never got tired of expressing his emotions before his maker. He did it in multiple ways; in songs, in dance, in words, he did it all and I believe this is how he won God’s heart and thrived through life.

I pray that we are always strengthened and never ashamed to express our deepest emotions to God in Jesus name.
